The Applause Libretto Giveaway: “Oklahoma”, “Avenue Q” & “The Sound of Music”

Here’s a little bit of info about Applause and their librettos:

The Applause Libretto Library Series

Most of the plays and musicals that premiered on Broadway in the middle of the twentieth century were also published as books—they were meant to be read as well as seen. Those editions, which omitted distracting technical information and guidelines for the director, were perfect for reading like a novel. Now, with The Applause Libretto Library Series, Applause Theatre & Cinema Books has revived the tradition of publishing great Broadway musicals in editions meant to be read and savored.

For the series, Applause Books has selected, and continues to select, the most important and the most popular Broadway musicals, including A Chorus Line, City of Angels, The Fantasticks, The Full Monty, Fiddler on the Roof, Grey Gardens, Hairspray, Passing Strange, Rent, and tick, tick…BOOM! Additionally, Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sunday in the Park with George, and Sweeney Todd can be bought separately or in one complete volume, Four by Sondheim. The latest additions to the series, all published in 2010 are Avenue Q, Oklahoma! (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first musical) and The Sound of Music (their last).

New in The Applause Libretto Library Series

Avenue Q: The Musical – Princeton is a bright-eyed college grad. He has big dreams and a tiny bank account. He’s a new resident of New York City. And he’s a puppet.

Broadway has never seen anything like Avenue Q, a mischievous and often raunchy look at the adult challenges of living in New York City, told mostly through the lives of puppets. Avenue Q won three Tony Awards in 2004 and has been produced all over the world. It ran on Broadway for six years and is currently playing Off Broadway.

book by Jeff Whitty, lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx
ISBN: 978-1-4234-8904-7 160 pages Paperback Color photo inserts $16.99

Oklahoma! – The road to true love never runs smoothly. With Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, holding the reins, love’s journey is a bumpy ride down a country road, but the new life they make together will begin in this brand-new state.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre that are still being followed today.

music by Richard Rodgers, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, based on the play by Lynn Riggs
ISBN: 978-1-4234-9056-2 130 pages Paperback Color photo insert $16.99

The Sound of Music – Maria, the new governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain, introduces the children to music. After she and the captain marry, Austria is annexed by Nazi Germany, and the family must escape over the mountains into Switzerland on the eve of World War II.

This stellar collaboration was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical, complete with the most thrilling and inspirational finale ever presented in theatre.

book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse, music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
suggested by The Story of the Trapp Family Singers
ISBN: 978-1-4234-9079-1 150 pages Paperback Color photo insert $16.99

Ticket Giveaway: “Reasons to be Pretty” @ San Jose Stage Company

San Jose Stage Company’s Reasons to be Pretty starts previews tonight Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 with an opening on Saturday, October 2, 2010.

A 2009 Tony Award nominee for Best Play, Neil LaBute’s bristling new comedy puts a ferocious cap on a trilogy of plays that began with The Shape of Things and Fat Pig. Simultaneously sentimental and uncompromising, Reasons To Be Pretty is a gorgeous play.

The cast features: Halsey Varady, Robert Brewer, Will Springhorn Jr. and Alison F. Rich.

Now you can win two tickets to see Reasons to be Pretty at San Jose Stage Company:

  • Comment, tweet or Facebook us and tell us an interesting fact about playwright, Neil LaBute.

Ticket Giveaway: “Dirty Blonde” @ San Jose Stage Company

San Jose Stage Company’s Dirty Blonde, directed by Rick Singleton, starts previews tonight Wednesday April 7th, 2010 with an opening on Saturday, April 10th, 2010.

“When I’m good, I’ve very good, but when I’m bad, I’m better.”

This is just one of the many delicious quotes from Mae West, famous for her uninhibited sexuality and amusing, provocative double entendres. Dirty Blonde is a “smart, tough and tenderhearted comedy” (NY Times), revealing the spirit behind Mae West’s sexy celluloid facade. Nominated for five Tony Awards in 2000, the South Bay Premiere chronicles her colorful career, from her beginnings in vaudeville to her legendary stature as one of the silver screen’s greatest bombshells.

I’ve saw a rehearsal a few weeks ago and was so enamored by Mae West, played by Judith Miller, that I promptly went home and watched all of the Youtube clips I could find. Martin Rojas-Dietrich and Colin Thomson also are featured in this 3-person play.

Now you win two tickets to see Dirty Blonde:

  • Comment, tweet or Facebook us and tell us your favorite Mae West quote.

Winner will be chosen on Friday, April 9th, 2010. Winner can choose to use their tickets on: April 9th, 14th, 15th, 21st, 22nd, 28th or 29th.

Dirty Blonde at San Jose Stage Company

April 7 – May 2, 2010
Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm
Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm
Sunday at 2:00 pm

Contest: Win a Copy of “A Little Night Music”

A few reviews of A Little Night Music:

  • New York Observer: “A fantastic night at the theater, an entrancing, lovely, delightfully cast production of a Stephen Sondheim classic.” (Read full review)
  • New York Times: “In addition to being drop-dead gorgeous in David Farley’s wasp-waisted period dresses, Ms. Zeta-Jones brings a decent voice, a supple dancer’s body and a vulpine self-possession to her first appearance on Broadway” (Read full review)

I had the opportunity to see this show, but traded my ticket at the last minute to see the closing night production of Finian’s Rainbow (which will never be forgotten). Am I sad that I’m probably going to miss this show? Yes, of course. (I’ve had a crush on Ms. Zeta-Jones ever since Zorro.) But luckily, the cast recording will give us an opportunity to become familiar with this Sondheim revival.

The stars of the show – Angela Lansbury & Catherine Zeta-Jones – are set to leave the cast at the end of June, but tickets are still being sold until August 29th, 2010. Will another star-studded cast be in the works? Or, will this show fade into oblivion when its stars have left the theatre?

I will note that this cast recording seems to have more dialogue then I have ever heard on a cast recording. At the beginning of “Send in the Clowns” they talk for a full two minutes before Catherine Zeta-Jones starts singing. (Listen below.)

What do you think about dialogue on a cast recording? Do you like it? I find it a bit strange. Playbill.com states, “The two-disc, 25-track recording features 12 players and promises a more complete representation of the lush, waltz-kissed musical, including scenes from Harold Wheeler’s poignant and brittle libretto.” Interesting.

You’ll definitely want to buy the physical copy of this album because it comes with a beautiful booklet featuring lyrics and pictures from the production. Buy on Amazon.

Here’s how you can win a digital copy of A Little Night Music:

  • Follow @abroadwaycritic on Twitter and mention @abroadwaycritic and tell your followers to follow me and you’ll be entered to win a copy!
  • On Facebook – Become a fan and post The Broadway Critic fan page to your profile page (make sure you use the @ mention function, so we know that you did!) and you’ll be entered to win a copy!
  • If you aren’t on Facebook or Twitter, you can comment and tell us why you want the CD and you’ll be entered to win a copy!

There will only be one winner! You’ll be contacted through Twitter, Facebook or email (depending how you entered) and will be chosen by Random.org.
